► (1870-1938) Escultor, grabador, poeta y autor dramático alemán. En su obra escultórica se nota ya la superación de la lección clásica de Rodin y un marcado interés expresionista. Entre las obras más representativas figuran El hombre que canta y Hombre recostado.

Escultor, artista gráfico y escritor alemán. Después de estudiar en Hamburgo, Dresde y París, se convirtió en un notable escultor del movimiento expresionista, al adquirir una cualidad de labrado tosco que privilegiaba la madera, material usado en la escultura gótica tardía. Incluso, cuando trabajaba con otros materiales más contemporáneos, con frecuencia emulaba la cualidad tosca de la madera para lograr un efecto más brutal. Alcanzó la fama en las décadas de 1920–30 con la ejecución de varios monumentos de guerra para la República de Weimar. Además, escribió obras de teatro expresionistas, las que ilustró con xilografías y litografías. Su taller en Güstrow se convirtió en museo después de su muerte.
